THEORY - 9 ECTS @SINT LUKAS

MADE IN BELGIUM - Bettie Smets
CAMPUS SINT LUKAS.

3 ECTS

This will be the first module that all exchange students studying in Brussels will go through. It is presented during an introductionary week (2nd week of September) just before the start of the classes. This week consists of an introduction to LUCA School of Arts.

Students will be given an info session from the international office a the students services agency, including a guided tour through our Brussels campuses (campus Sint Lukas and campus Narafi).

Furthermore, with our visual arts department students will dive deep into Belgium’s culture (film, theatre, dance). Visits to musea, theatre etc are very likely to happen during that week.

IRRATIONAL KNOWING - Johan Teirlinck
CAMPUS SINT LUKAS

6 ECTS

This is a theory class, taught in English on campus Sint-Lukas Brussels.

The class focuses on the difference between rational knowledge and irrational knowing. Questions like ‘why do we love?, why do we act? and why do we live? illustrate that we seem to ‘know’ a lot more than the strictly rational.

Classes are held through debate, sharing of views and discussions whereby the input of students is important. Students will also ask to talk about and present their own work (with a link to the irrational knowing) and will get feedback on it.

Coordinator – johan.teirlinck@luca-arts.be

PRACTICE - 21 ECTS @NARAFI

PRACTICE - 21 ECTS @NARAFI

At campus Narafi, students will join practical classes. Most classes are focused around ‘doing’ and ‘creating’ work. The coordinator of the class will help exchange students in English.

WORKSHOPS - Lennert Deprettere

3 ECTS

Workshops is a module designed to give students the freedom to explore everything Belgium has to offer in terms of exhibitions, events, photo fairs, workshops, extra curriculum courses, etc …

It’s meant to introduce students to the contemporary art and photography scene. We encourage students to go out and explore musea etc. A few of the recurring photo events are Paris Photo, Breda Photo, Unseen Amsterdam, De Donkere Kamer, ….

A visit to Paris Photo (second week of November) is mandatory, but the trip is organised by Narafi (bus and accommodation).

STUDIO PRACTICE 2

9 ECTS

This module consists of 3 submodules, each 3 ECTS.

If the student’s knowledge of studio photography is limited we will encourage to study the theory through the book ‘Light: Science and Magic’ by Fil Hunter, Steven Biver and Paul Fuqua, Focal Press, 5th edition.

STILL LIFE (3 ECTS)

In the module Still life, we encourage students to reflect on all facets of a directed, staged image. Therefore we focus on developing an efficient working methodology where students learn how to deal with all aspects of image making: technically, content wise and form.

A basic knowledge of safe operation of photographic gear (camera, studio lights, light meter, software,….) is essential but will be further explored.

At the end of this module students will have a sound knowledge on how to translate a concept into an impactful photographic image.

Coordinator: – isabel.rottiers@luca-arts.be

FASHION & PORTRAITURE (3 ECTS)

In the module Fashion and portraiture, students will team up with each other in order to mimic a real life fashion or portrait production in- and outside a professional studio environment. The focus is on artificial light, correct lighting techniques, composition, working with models and post-production.

At the end of the module students will be able to create technically challenging and content-wise striking portrait or fashion images.

Coordinator: – pieter.desmedtjans@luca-arts.be

DOCUMENTARY (3 ECTS)

In the module Documentary photography, students will be encouraged to search and develop their own visual and photographic language through a documentary approach. The focus will be on storytelling and working around a series of compelling images. Research and analysis are key in this module.

At the end of the module students will be able to tell stories through images in such a way that it grabs the attention of viewers.

STUDIO PRACTICE 3 - Tom Swalens

6 ECTS

LARGE FORMAT CAMERA

Students will be introduced to the ins and outs of working with a large format camera. This module will take the students back to the origins of photography: the principles of the camera obscura and analogue photography. The slowness of this medium will shed a different light on how to approach image making.

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY – PIETER DE SMEDT-JANS

It takes a lot of technical knowledge and creativity to turn a seemingly ordinary building in to a stunning, striking image. This module will explore these different techniques and approaches. Students will learn to work with tilt-shift lenses in order to do so.

At the end of the module students will create a mock up of an architectural magazine, which will be of great value to their own portfolio.

Coordinator – pieter.desmedtjans@luca-arts.be
